Parental Involvement

gustavoGustavo Cuevas makes physical education more than just physical. He makes it about self-confidence, a healthy lifestyle, and personal effort. For him the primary goal of his job is to help kids “have a positive mindset about themselves.” Growing up, he lacked a positive mentor and he sees how important it is for students to have someone to teach them to pursue their dreams.

“I go out there and push the kids whether we’re running a mile or playing basketball. Whatever we’re doing it’s not how fast you go but it’s about you mentally being able to go all the way. It’s about believing in yourself,” Cuevas said.

For Cuevas, one of the best moments was seeing the parental involvement. “I couldn’t believe at the end of the year I get thank you cards from the parents who clearly took a vested interest in what exactly I was teaching the kids. That’s really special.”
